History & background
Kōchi (高知) bred reformer Sakamoto Ryōma (坂本龍馬), a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. Its clear Shimanto River (四万十川) is called Japan's 'last clear stream'.

Getting there: Kōchi is reached by air from Tokyo/Osaka or by limited express across Shikoku.

When to go — season by season
Spring through autumn suit the river and coast; August brings the high-energy Yosakoi (よさこい) dance festival. The southern climate stays mild.
A suggested visit
Tour original Kōchi Castle and the lively Sunday market, then head to the Shimanto River for cycling and 'submersible' bridges. Try katsuo no tataki (鰹のたたき) seared over straw.
