Chiba Travel Guide for Japanese Learners
Tokyo's seaside neighbor — the airport gateway, beaches, and a famous temple.
Chiba is where most visitors first land (Narita Airport) and home to Tokyo Disney Resort (actually in Urayasu). Beyond that lie surf beaches, the Bōsō Peninsula, and the grand Narita-san temple.
History & background
Chiba (千葉) has long been Edo/Tokyo's coastal larder and gateway; Narita-san Shinshō-ji (成田山新勝寺), founded in 940, draws millions of New Year worshippers each year.
What to see
- Narita-san Shinshō-ji temple
- Tokyo Disney Resort (Urayasu)
- Nokogiriyama and its cliff Buddha
- Kujūkuri beaches for surfing
What to eat
Fresh seafood and peanuts are local specialties.
Getting there & when to go
Getting there: Narita Airport is in Chiba; central Chiba ~40 min from Tokyo by train.
Best time: Summer for beaches and surfing; spring for temple visits.
When to go — season by season
Summer is for the Kujūkuri (九十九里) surf beaches and the Bōsō (房総) coast. Spring suits flower fields and temple visits; the climate stays mild year-round.
A suggested visit
On a long Narita layover, take the quick train to Narita-san temple and the old approach street. With more time, the Bōsō Peninsula offers beaches and the cliff temple at Nokogiriyama (鋸山).
Long layover at Narita? Narita-san temple is a quick, worthwhile trip from the airport.
