Japanese stores that won't ship overseas — and what actually works
The most frustrating message in Japanese online shopping isn't "sold out" — it's finding the item and discovering the store won't sell it to you. Japan's biggest official stores and marketplaces restrict overseas buyers in different ways: some just don't ship abroad, some actively block proxy services, some quietly point you to an approved workaround. We checked each store's own rules (August 2026) rather than repeating forum lore — one of the "blocked" stores below turned out to officially recommend a forwarding service. Pokémon Center Online — no overseas delivery, full stop
The official Japanese Pokémon goods store answers the question directly in its FAQ: overseas delivery is not offered. Accounts also go through Japanese phone-number verification, and high-demand items sell by lottery (抽選販売) — the system is built for domestic buyers end to end. The Pokémon Company runs official Pokémon Center web stores for some other regions with their own catalogues, so check yours first; for Japan-exclusive items, the realistic route is the secondary market — Japanese buyers resell Pokémon Center items on Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions the week they ship, and a proxy brings them to you. Prices run above retail for hot items; that margin is what "sold only in Japan" costs.
Premium Bandai — the actively defended wall
P-Bandai is the strictest of the bunch: it banned purchases through proxy services outright in July 2023, and region-locks its listings on top. The one-line version: check Premium Bandai's store for your region first, and treat Mercari as the reliable fallback, since the ban doesn't touch resale.
Melonbooks — "blocked" store that actually hands you the key
Here's the one the forums get wrong. Melonbooks, one of Japan's biggest doujinshi retailers, ships domestically only — but its own FAQ says, in as many words: if you want overseas delivery, use a service like tenso.com (a package-forwarding service: you get a Japanese address, the store ships there, tenso forwards to you). A store officially endorsing the workaround is the opposite of blocking it, so doujin buyers can proceed with a clear conscience. Two practical notes: forwarding means you handle the store checkout yourself in Japanese, and age-restricted works have their own rules per destination country — check before ordering. Older doujinshi also turn up on Suruga-ya, whose global store has a dedicated doujin category and ships directly.
Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions — restricted, but with an official door
Japan's two big secondary marketplaces restrict overseas buyers — and both have an official overseas-purchase partner built in: Buyee. This is the least ambiguous case on the page: the proxy route isn't a workaround here, it's the sanctioned channel. Suruga-ya — the restriction that quietly disappeared
Suruga-ya's Japanese site is domestic and Japanese-only, and for years "how do I buy from Suruga-ya" meant proxies. It doesn't any more: the chain runs an official English global store that ships to most of the world. Details, payment methods and the US-specific caveats are in our Suruga-ya guide. Restrictions change in both directions — this one opened up, P-Bandai closed down — which is why checking the store's own pages beats trusting a two-year-old forum thread.
A note on event tickets
Concert and event tickets are the other thing overseas fans constantly ask about, and we deliberately don't cover routes around ticket restrictions: Japan's ticket resale law prohibits unauthorized resale above face value, venues check IDs at some events, and "workarounds" can leave you with a ticket that won't admit you. If an event matters to you, use the official channels (some tours run official lotteries or resale for overseas fans) rather than the gray market.
