P-Bandai and Gunpla from overseas: what still works
Premium Bandai (P-Bandai) is Bandai's official web shop for made-to-order and limited items โ including the exclusive Gunpla kits that never hit regular shelves. It's also famously hard to buy from outside Japan: in July 2023 Premium Bandai banned overseas purchasing through proxy services, and Japanese listings are even region-locked so you may not be able to open the product page without a Japanese connection. "Which route works now" changes often, so this guide sticks to the routes that are structurally reliable in 2026, in the order we'd try them.
What P-Bandai is, and what happened in 2023
P-Bandai items are made-to-order or limited-run: exclusive Gunpla variants and colorways, accessory sets, and franchise merch that regular retailers never stock. Preorders open on p-bandai.jp, close, and the item ships months later โ and once it's gone, Bandai rarely reissues it. That scarcity is the whole appeal, and the whole problem.
Since July 2023, Premium Bandai has refused orders placed through overseas proxy services โ buyers relaying ZenMarket's own notice reported the message "Premium Bandai have banned purchasing from overseas through use of proxy services". Combined with region-locking on listings, the old default of "just proxy it" is gone. Some smaller proxies and forwarding setups still slip through case by case, but any specific claim about which one works this month goes stale fast โ treat lists you find online (including ours, if this paragraph is old) with suspicion and check the date.
The four routes, ranked by reliability
1. Premium Bandai's own regional stores
Bandai runs official regional Premium Bandai stores โ Premium Bandai USA (p-bandai.com/us) sells model kits, figures and more directly. The catalogue is a subset of the Japanese store and preorder windows differ, but when your item is listed there, this is the cheapest, safest route with zero workarounds. Check it first, every time.
2. Specialist import shops
Shops that cater to overseas Gunpla buyers routinely secure P-Bandai preorder allocations and resell them at a markup โ collectors on MyFigureCollection name stores like Hobby Genki and Nin Nin Game as regular sources. You pay a premium over the Japanese price, but you get a normal store checkout, and for in-demand items a guaranteed preorder often beats gambling on the aftermarket later.
3. The secondary market (the dependable fallback)
Every P-Bandai item eventually shows up on Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions once Japanese buyers receive theirs. Prices for popular kits open above list and drift with demand, but unpopular exclusives frequently sell near or even under the original price. Proxies work normally here โ the 2023 block applies to ordering from P-Bandai directly, not to buying from Japanese resellers. This is the route that always works.
4. Forwarding services and small proxies
Some buyers order themselves with a Japanese forwarding address, or use small proxies P-Bandai hasn't flagged. It can work; it can also end in a cancelled order, since P-Bandai cancels orders it identifies as overseas-bound. If a guaranteed outcome matters, use routes 1โ3.
The secondary-market route in practice
- Find the kit's Japanese name (P-Bandai listings and resale listings are in Japanese โ the katakana product name from p-bandai.jp is your search key).
- Search Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions through a proxy. ใๆช็ต็ซใmeans unassembled,ใ่ผธ้็ฎฑๆช้ๅฐใmeans the shipping carton is still sealed โ the collector-grade keyword.
- Compare against the original list price (shown on the P-Bandai product page) so you know the markup you're paying.
- Consolidate with other purchases at the proxy warehouse โ Gunpla boxes are light but bulky, so packing options matter more than weight.
Service fees are flat and small next to a P-Bandai kit's price โ Buyee and Remambo charge ยฅ500 per order. The full fee comparison across four proxies is in our proxy service guide.
Preorder timing and price reality
- Preorder windows matter more than release dates. P-Bandai items sell out at preorder; by release day your options are already routes 2 and 3. If you see an announcement you care about, act during the window (via a regional store or a specialist shop) rather than waiting for reviews.
- Not every exclusive appreciates. The aftermarket premium concentrates on popular suits and colorways; plenty of P-Bandai kits resell at or below list. If you're buying to build, patience on Mercari often beats preorder FOMO.
- Regular Gunpla doesn't need any of this. Standard kits are widely exported โ see our Gunpla starter kit guide. This article's machinery is only for the exclusives.
- US buyers: watch the toy rules. Since July 2026, US CPSC regulatory changes mean some toy and hobby shipments to the US can be cancelled by either direct stores or proxies, and the US ended its de minimis duty exemption in 2025 โ budget duties into the total.
Japan puts Gundam on manhole covers too โ real locations you can visit. See the Gundam manholes guide โ and the Japan-only anime merch guide โ
Common questions
Q. Can I still use a proxy to order from P-Bandai?
A. Officially no โ Premium Bandai banned overseas proxy purchasing in July 2023, and listings are region-locked. Some small proxies and forwarding setups still get through case by case, but orders can be cancelled. The reliable routes are the regional P-Bandai stores, specialist import shops, and the secondary market.
Q. What's the cheapest way to get a P-Bandai exclusive Gunpla?
A. If Premium Bandai USA (or your regional store) lists it, that's usually cheapest. Otherwise compare a specialist shop's preorder price against the Mercari/Yahoo! Auctions aftermarket after release โ for less-hyped kits the aftermarket is often near or below list.
Q. Does the proxy ban affect buying P-Bandai items on Mercari?
A. No. The ban covers ordering from Premium Bandai itself. Buying a P-Bandai item from a Japanese reseller on Mercari or Yahoo! Auctions through a proxy works like any other purchase.
