History & background
Hyōgo (兵庫) spans coast to coast. Himeji Castle (姫路城), the 'White Heron', survived war and earthquakes intact and became Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. Kobe (神戸) opened as a treaty port in 1868.

When to go — season by season
Early April frames Himeji Castle in cherry blossoms. Kobe's harbour sparkles year-round; the Kinosaki (城崎温泉) onsen town is cosiest in winter.
A suggested visit
Day-trip from Osaka to Himeji Castle by shinkansen (about 40 minutes), then explore Kobe's harbour and Chinatown for an evening of Kobe beef. Add Kinosaki for an onsen overnight.
Himeji Castle is an easy day trip from Osaka or Kyoto by shinkansen.
